OSRS Barrows Guide 2026: Ironman-friendly

Barrows brothers guide

Barrows is a great introduction to bossing — the mechanics are easy to pick up, and it doesn't require high-level gear or expensive supplies to do consistently. It's especially useful for Ironman accounts, as it's the only place to obtain all six Barrows equipment sets, each with unique set effects.

These sets are some of the best gear mid-level Ironman accounts can get, providing solid combat bonuses that are helpful for other bosses and content across the game. In this guide, I'll cover the best gear for Barrows, a mid-level setup, a budget-friendly Ironman option, and the easiest strategy to consistently take out all six brothers and secure the full Barrows equipment sets.

Requirements for Barrows

  • Priest in Peril: This is required to enter Morytania, where the crypts are
  • His Faithful Servant: required to start digging the crypts

Recommendations for Barrows

I recommend having the following levels to clear the barrows faster and more efficiently:

  • 60+ Attack
  • 60+ Strength
  • 70+ Defence — allows you to wear any Barrows equipment as soon as you obtain it and tank hits from enemies in the dungeon. If you don't mind using more food each round or don't want to wear the Barrows equipment right away, 50+ Attack, Strength, and Defence will get the job done
  • 50+ Ranged — for Magic Shortbow and rune arrows
  • 43+ Prayer — the bare minimum for protection prayers. Higher prayer will save a lot of prayer potions per trip.
  • 50+ Magic — for Iban Staff. If you can afford Barrows teleport tabs, this is all you need for magic.

For Ironman, I'd suggest pushing for slightly higher stats before starting:

  • 61+ Ranged — for the Rune Crossbow and Broad Bolts since Broad Bolts are much easier to restock as an Ironman compared to Rune Arrows
  • 60+ Prayer — saves significantly on prayer potion usage, which can be harder to obtain on Ironman
  • 78+ Magic — gives access to the Barrows portal teleport, removing the need to source teleport tabs

Location & Getting There

The Barrows are located just south of Morytania at the point shown below.

Barrows map

Here are the quickest ways to get there:

  • Barrows map Barrows Teleport Tablets — This is the fastest option alongside the Barrows portal. These tabs teleport you directly to the burial mounds and cost around 3K GP each on the Grand Exchange, which will slightly cut into your profits per run.
  • Barrows Portal (POH) — The best option in the long run and the cheapest per trip. Requires 83 Magic and 50 Construction to build, though you can boost from 78 Magic up to 83 with spicy stews. Barrows portal

Highly recommended for Ironman — it takes roughly 250 to 480 runs to complete any full Barrows equipment set, and using the second fastest option adds around 3–6 extra hours of travel time alone. Getting the portal early eliminates this.

  • Mort'ton Teleport Scroll — The second-best option for normal accounts but not viable for ironman
  • Morytania Legs 3 or 4 — Teleports directly to Burgh de Rott for free, making it the second best option for Ironman.
  • Fairy Ring (BKR) — The last reliable option for both normal accounts and Ironman. From the fairy ring, run to the swamp boaty, take the boat to Mort'ton, then make your way to the Barrows from there as shown in the image above.

There are a few other ways to reach the Barrows as shown in the image above, but the options above explained are the quickest and most cost-effective — I'd recommend sticking to one of these.

Ghommal's Hilt 2

Ghommal's Hilt The Ghommal's Hilt 2 removes the prayer drain effect when facing the Barrows brothers, making trips a lot easier and safer. It requires 161 Combat Achievement points to obtain, but it's well worth pursuing — especially on Ironman, where prayer potions are harder to get.

Best Plugins for Barrows

I recommend turning on these plugins:

  • The Barrows Brothers: The Barrows Brothers plugin displays the first letter of each brother's name on the minimap above their respective hills, making it easy to locate them. You can customise the colour of the initials and set a separate colour for brothers you've already killed. It also shows the total Exchange value of the chest when opened, highlights the correct answer for the door puzzle, and displays an estimated prayer drain timer.
  • Barrows Door Highlighter: The Barrows Door Highlighter plugin highlights locked and unlocked doors while navigating the tunnel, letting you identify the correct path to the chest at a glance.

Facing the Barrows Brothers

There are 6 brothers in total, each using a different attack style and weak to different combat styles, as shown below. For the best results, switch your prayers, gear, and attack style based on each brother's weakness.

  • Ahrim the Blighted — attacks with Magic, weak to Ranged and Melee
  • Dharok the Wretched — attacks with Melee, weak to Magic
  • Guthan the Infested — attacks with Melee, weak to Magic
  • Karil the Tainted — attacks with Ranged, weak to Melee and Magic
  • Torag the Corrupted — attacks with Melee, weak to Magic
  • Verac the Defiled — attacks with Melee, weak to Magic

Barrows graves

Each brother is found in one of the six burial mounds shown above. You'll need a spade to access each crypt — stand on the burial mound and left-click the spade to dig down. Once inside, you will find the sarcophagus at the center; search it — the brother will emerge and begin attacking.

Once you've dug into any burial mound and entered the crypt or tunnel, your prayer points will begin draining — move through as quickly as possible to save prayer potions. The Ghommal's Hilt 2 explained above nullifies this effect.

Barrows brothers Sarcophagus

Note: While searching a sarcophagus, you may see the message: "You have found a hidden tunnel, do you want to enter?" This leads to the tunnel containing the Barrows chest, filled with monsters. The sarcophagus that leads to the tunnel is random each run. Don't enter the tunnel until you've killed the other 5 brothers.

Work your way through the crypts, defeating all brothers except the one whose sarcophagus leads to the tunnel — that brother should be saved for last. The quickest route is a simple clockwise loop:

Dharok → Guthan → Karil → Torag → Verac → Ahrim

For example:

  1. Start with Dharok — equip magic gear, pray Protect from Melee, and attack with your best magic weapon
  2. Move to Guthan — Pray protect from melee and continue using magic since he shares the same weakness
  3. Head to Karil — Pray protect from ranged, switch to melee gear and attack with your best melee weapon
  4. Reach Torag — His crypt leads to the tunnel, so i skip him for now and continue the route
  5. Move to Verac — Pray protect from melee and use magic
  6. Finally, tackle Ahrim — Pray protect from magic, switch to ranged to take advantage of his weakness
  7. After killing Ahrim as your fifth brother, return to Torag's crypt and enter the tunnel

The Tunnel

Always make sure you've killed 5 brothers before entering the tunnel. If you find it early, skip it and finish the remaining brothers first, then return as shown in the example above.

Once you've killed five brothers, head back to the sarcophagus leading to the tunnel and left-click it. You will get the same message as before, but this time reply "I'm not scared" to enter. The brother whose sarcophagus leads to the tunnel will be the final one you face inside.

Once inside, you need to find the right doors leading to the chest, which is always at the centre of the tunnel. Some doors are locked, but the ones leading to the chest are not. The correct doors are random each run, but if you're using the Barrows Door Highlight plugin in RuneLite, it will mark the correct doors as shown below, removing the guesswork.

Barrows tunnel

⚠️ The final brother can spawn whenever you open any door in the tunnel — stay alert and be ready.

Reward Potential

When you are in the tunnels, you will see your reward potential at the side of your screen. This determines the average reward you'll get from looting the Barrows chest.

For the optimal "sweet spot", kill:

  • 2 Skeletons
  • 1 Bloodworm
  • All 6 brothers

This gives you 874 points, putting your reward potential at 86%. This maximises the average value of your rewards, consistently increasing the runes you get while avoiding bolt racks, half keys, and dragon med helms.

To make it quicker, kill the 2 Skeletons and 1 Bloodworm as you come across them while opening the correct doors in the tunnel. Don't use protection prayers — you can tank their hits or use food, but stay ready for the final brother.

The Reward Chest

Barrows chest

There is always a puzzle at the final door leading to the chest. The Barrows plugin highlights the correct answers, so just click the highlighted shapes to get through it. When you reach the chest, opening it will cause the last brother to spawn if he hasn't already. Kill him, and double-check that you've killed 2 Skeletons and 1 Bloodworm to reach the 86% reward potential. Once at 86%, left-click the chest to loot it and claim your rewards.

After looting, if any enemies in the room are still attacking, use the torch near the chest to safespot them, allowing you to safely teleport out.

Rewards from Barrows

When you loot the Barrows chest, you can receive any of the following:

  • Barrows equipment pieces (6 sets)
  • Coins
  • Blood runes
  • Death runes
  • Chaos runes
  • Mind runes
  • Bolt racks
  • Loop half of a key
  • Tooth half of a key
  • Dragon med helm

There's roughly a 1/15 chance of getting any Barrows piece, and each individual piece has a 7 × 1/2,448 chance of appearing in the chest.
