OSRS Wintertodt Guide 2026: Conquering the Cold

osrs Wintertodt guide

The Wintertodt is a unique, skilling-based boss in Old School RuneScape and one of the best ways to train Firemaking, especially for an Ironman. Instead of traditional combat, you subdue it by chopping bruma roots, feeding them into braziers, and surviving the cold.

However, Wintertodt is more than just a Firemaking training method. It also provides valuable early-game supplies, including herbs, seeds, ores, raw fish, and other resources that would otherwise take hours for ironman to gather themselves. Because of this, many ironman rush 50 Firemaking and start doing Wintertodt early, using it to build up useful supplies while quickly pushing their Firemaking level higher.

Important Note: Despite being a skilling activity, the Wintertodt prison is still dangerous. Dying here works like a normal, dangerous death — your items are sent to a grave, and Hardcore Ironmen will lose their status.

Requirements For Wintertodt

  • 50 firemaking: The only skill requirement to fight the Wintertodt is 50 Firemaking. That’s it, no quests are required to unlock the activity. Your Hitpoints level also doesn’t matter, since every player starts each round with 100% warmth regardless of their HP level.

Because of this low entry requirement, Wintertodt is one of the fastest bosses you can start on a fresh account. As soon as you reach 50 Firemaking, you can jump straight in and begin stacking up supplies, early GP, and useful resources.

Location of Wintertodt: Quickest ways to get there

Wintertodt is located in the Wintertodt Camp in Great Kourend, in the Northern Tundras, as shown below. How to get to Wintertodt Here are the best and most practical ways to get there quickly.

  • Games Necklace: This is by far the best and easiest way to get to Wintertodt for both main and Ironman accounts. Simply right-click the Games Necklace and select “Wintertodt” to teleport directly outside the camp. This teleport will only work if you have taken Veos’ ship to Great Kourend at least once before. Main accounts can buy a Games Necklace from the Grand Exchange. Ironman must craft their own before using this method (requires 7 magic and a sapphire necklace)
  • Lovakenj minecart: If you don’t want to buy or craft a Games Necklace yet, the Lovakengj minecart is a solid alternative. First, travel to Port Piscarilius by taking Veos’ ship. Just west of the dock, you’ll find a minecart as shown above. Right-click it, select “Travel,” then choose “Northern Tundras.” This will take you directly to the Wintertodt camp for 20 coins.
  • Other methods: There are two additional ways to reach Wintertodt: Fairy Ring (code CIR) and Arceuus Library teleport. However, if you’ve unlocked those, you likely also have access to faster or more convenient methods like the Games Necklace. Most players stick to the necklace once it’s available. .

Although not required to start fighting the Wintertodt, having the right items makes the activity much more efficient.

  • Warm clothing: While you can play Wintertodt without any warm clothing, it won’t be a pleasant experience. Without it, you’ll take significantly more damage from the cold, use far more food, and spend less time actually focusing on the activity.

When starting, one of the best options is the Clue Hunter outfit. It’s easy to obtain and provides excellent protection against the cold at Wintertodt. The outfit cannot be bought from the Grand Exchange, so both main and Ironman accounts must obtain it themselves. Fortunately, this only takes a few minutes to collect, especially if you have access to a few teleports.

You can find the locations for each piece of the outfit here. As you continue doing Wintertodt, you’ll also have a chance to obtain pieces of the Pyromancer outfit from reward crates. This outfit also counts as warm clothing and is the best gear for the activity.

  • Axe: This is required to chop bruma roots. I recommend using the best axe you have available to increase the rate at which you gather roots.
  • Hammer: If you plan to repair broken braziers and gain Construction XP during Wintertodt rounds, you should bring a hammer, as it is required to fix them.
  • Tinderbox or Bruma torch: A tinderbox is needed to light the braziers during each round. However, there is a chance to receive a Bruma torch as a reward from Wintertodt. The torch can also be used to light braziers, and since it can be equipped, it saves an inventory space.
  • Food or rejuvenation potions: You will need either food or rejuvenation potions to stay alive while fighting the Wintertodt. I explain these options in more detail below.

Official worlds

You can do Wintertodt either solo or with other players on the dedicated Wintertodt worlds. For beginners, I strongly recommend doing it in groups, as solo runs are more difficult and require a bit more experience. In this guide, I’ll mainly focus on the group method since it’s the most common way players start doing Wintertodt.

On group worlds, a round usually takes about 5–8 minutes to subdue the Wintertodt. After it’s defeated, there is a short downtime of around 1–2 minutes before it recovers and the next round begins.

Here are the official worlds:

  • W307
  • W309
  • W311
  • W389
  • W402

Warmth

Warmth and Wintertodt energy

When you enter the arena, the top-left corner of your screen shows both your warmth and Wintertodt’s energy. While facing the Wintertodt, the Warmth level acts as your health inside the prison, which will gradually decrease from the cold and his attacks. Be careful—if your warmth drops to 0%, your character will die instantly. Your warmth will decrease more slowly when you wear warm clothing, as mentioned above. You can restore warmth using either food or rejuvenation potions, but the most efficient method is to use rejuvenation potions. Each potion has four doses, and each dose restores 30% warmth. This is especially convenient for Ironman, as it saves inventory space and time by eliminating the need to gather or buy food before doing Wintertodt.

You can also restore warmth with food. Any type of food restores 35% warmth, regardless of what it is. If you prefer using food, cakes are a good choice since they provide multiple bites and are easy to obtain.

How to make Rejuvenation potions

Rejuvenation potion Rejuvenation potions can be made by adding a Bruma herb to a rejuvenation potion (unf). Bruma herbs can be picked from the Sprouting roots inside the Wintertodt prison. You can obtain rejuvenation potion (unf) from the crates nearby. Both the crates and the Sprouting roots are located close to the entrance, making them very easy to access.

Wintertodt's Energy

You can see Wintertodt’s energy on the top-left side of your screen, just below your warmth, as shown above. The Pyromancers drain this energy while the braziers are lit, but if all the braziers go out, the energy will slowly regenerate until they are relit.

How the Wintertodt Works: Getting points

Your main goal at Wintertodt is to help the Pyromancers drain Wintertodt’s energy from 100% to 0%. You do this by performing several actions around the arena that earn points, all while keeping an eye on your warmth level so it doesn’t get too low. If your warmth reaches 0%, your character will instantly die. You can find the points you have earned just below the Warmth and Wintertodt energy bars

Wintertodt points

To qualify for rewards, you need to stay active and earn at least 500 points each round. Once the Wintertodt is subdued, the Pyromancers will recognize your efforts, granting bonus Firemaking XP and at least two rolls from the reward cart. Reaching 500 points isn’t difficult, even at low Firemaking levels. Once you get the hang of the mechanics, you can easily earn 600+ points per round, and 900+ if you choose to fletch Bruma Roots before adding them to the braziers. ObjectsinWintertodt

During every round, players contribute by performing these actions, earning points and XP:

  • Lighting Braziers - 25 points: You can do this at the start of each round and whenever a brazier goes out. Make sure you have a Tinderbox in your inventory or a Bruma Torch wielded, then left-click the unlit brazier to light it. Doing this grants Firemaking XP equal to 6 times your Firemaking level. It’s recommended to light every brazier whenever possible, as it gives a solid point boost.
  • Feeding Roots to the Braziers - 10 points: The most consistent way to earn points in Wintertodt is by adding raw Bruma Roots to a lit brazier. Each root grants Firemaking XP equal to 3 times your Firemaking level. First, chop Bruma Roots from the locations shown below, which also gives Woodcutting XP. Once your inventory is full, right-click and use the roots on a brazier to automatically burn them. Keep in mind that this can be interrupted if you take damage from the Wintertodt.
  • Feeding Kindling to the Brazier- 25 points: Chopped Bruma Roots can be turned into Kindling by using a knife on them, which gives Fletching XP. Adding Bruma Kindling to a lit brazier grants more Firemaking XP than raw roots (3.8× your Firemaking level) and gives an extra 10 points per action. However, I don’t recommend fletching Kindling if your main goal is faster XP. You should only fletch roots if you want better rewards or if you’re at risk of not reaching 500 points before the round ends.
  • Repairing Braziers (25 points): Braziers will occasionally collapse during a round. If you have a hammer in your inventory, left-click the brazier to fix it. This grants Construction XP equal to 4× your Construction level (requires a Player-Owned House). It’s recommended to repair braziers each time, especially if your Construction level is low. By training Firemaking to 99 at Wintertodt, you’ll naturally reach 35+ Construction, letting you skip early training methods.
  • Healing Pyromancers (75 points): You can use a dose of a Rejuvenation Potion on an incapacitated Pyromancer (marked with a red hat icon). The Pyromancer are found close to the braziers. This can be challenging in group worlds, as other players may reach them first. If successful, healing a Pyromancer grants Herblore XP equal to 0.1× your Herblore level and awards 75 points — the highest point reward in the game. It also allows the Pyromancer’s brazier to be relit, helping the team maintain Wintertodt’s energy drain.

Wintertodt's Attacks

Here are the attacks to watch out for at the Wintertodt. These attacks reduce your warmth, and if it falls to 0%, your character will die instantly.

  • Standard Cold Damage: This is the most common form of damage in the Wintertodt, especially at the start of the round when its energy is high. It occurs randomly, but wearing warm clothing and keeping the braziers lit can help reduce its effects.
  • Brazier Attacks (Heavy/Light): This attack damages the brazier and can extinguish it. If you’re close when it happens, you’ll take heavy damage, along with any players nearby. Expect this attack when Wintertodt’s energy is low.
  • Area Attack (Snowfall): This is a 3×3 area attack. Avoid the falling snow graphic, as it marks where the damage will land. It won’t target tiles next to obstacles and becomes less frequent when Wintertodt’s energy is high.
  • Pyromancer Attack: Occasionally, the Wintertodt will damage a Pyromancer. This slows down the drain of Wintertodt’s energy and happens more often when its energy is low. If you have a Rejuvenation Potion, left-click the Pyromancer to heal them.

Safe Zone: The area near the entrance is safe from all attacks shown below, but you cannot fletch there.

An Example run of Wintertodt

  • First, make sure you’re wearing warm clothing and have food, your tinderbox, axe, and hammer ready. If using food, 4 pieces of cake should be enough. Use the bank below to double-check that you haven’t forgotten anything. Also, check that you’re in the right world, depending on whether you want to play solo or in a group. For this example, we’ll be using the group method. Entrance of Wintertodt
  • Next, right-click the doors of Dinh and select Peek to check the Wintertodt’s energy and see how many players are inside. It’s best to start a round fresh, as this gives you more time to earn points and reach the minimum needed for rewards.
  • When the Wintertodt’s energy reaches 0%, marking the end of the round, enter the Door of Dinh. The Wintertodt’s energy bar will now be replaced by the rest timer. Stand close to a brazier and get ready — as soon as the timer hits 0:00, left-click the brazier to light it, then left-click the bruma roots to start chopping them.I like to stick to the Bruma roots near the door since they’re the closest. There are four Bruma roots and braziers in total and you can move to the other side if you prefer.
  • When your inventory is full of bruma roots, left-click the brazier to start burning them, and you’ll begin earning points. You can also fletch some roots before burning to gain extra points. Repeat this process until the end of the round, but keep an eye on the braziers — if they get damaged, left-click to repair them, then immediately left-click again to relight them.
  • At the end of the round, if you’ve contributed at least 500 points, you’ll earn Firemaking XP and at least two rewards from the reward cart. There’s no need to search the cart each round, as it holds all your rewards until you’re ready to collect them. Afterward, head to the bank to restock food or supplies for the next round.

Experience Rates

XP rates vary greatly by level, strategy, and efficiency. See the data dump/strategy guide for detailed tables. General estimates: Firemaking: 150k-350k+/hr (Group, no fletch), 140k-290k+/hr (Group, fletch), potentially up to 450k+/hr (World Hopping). Solo rates are generally lower per hour but higher per game.

Other Skills: Modest passive XP in Woodcutting, Fletching, Construction, and Herblore, depending on actions performed.

Rewards
